Biochemist/Chemist – Lipid Profiling & Signalling Group
Salary from £26,022 per annum
HNR conducts nutrition research and surveillance to improve the health of the population with a focus on obesity and metabolic risk, musculoskeletal health, intestinal health and nutritional inequalities.
We are seeking a biochemist/chemist with an excellent educational record and a strong interest in metabolomics and/or lipidomics to pursue a research program within the group of Dr. Julian Griffin at MRC HNR, Cambridge aimed at elucidating the role the peroxisome profilerator activated receptors (PPARs) play in regulating systemic metabolism in man. The PPARs act as nutritional sensors to regulate glucose metabolism, fat storage and oxidation and amino acid catabolism. The suitable candidate will be involved in both in vivo and in vitro systems, using both animal model systems and human studies, to follow the metabolic changes regulated by PPARs and understand the role of the receptors play in nutrition, obesity, type II diabetes and dyslipidaemia.
The suitable candidate will have experience in practical metabolomics, and experience in proteomic and transcriptomic approaches would be considered an advantage. Expertise in liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry is essential as the candidate will be required to develop novel assays for quantifying and identifying metabolites of interest. To be able to conduct such work effectively, a solid grasp of human metabolism and metabolic regulation is also necessary. The candidate will ideally have a good statistical background, with the use of both univariate and multivariate statistics for omic data processing being an important component of this post. Experience in cell culture would be considered an advantage.
In addition to research the suitable candidate should also be able to demonstrate the capability to supervise more junior members of the laboratory including PhD and undergraduate students, as well as provide training in mass spectrometry/lipidomics for visiting workers to MRC HNR.
This is a full time, open ended position with salary dependent on qualifications and experience. In addition to your salary we offer a flexible pay and reward policy, 30 days annual leave, free on site car parking and optional membership of MRC’s final salary pension scheme.

Senior Investigator Scientist – Physiological Modelling of Metabolic Risk Group
Salary from £35,935 per annum
HNR conducts nutrition research and surveillance to improve the health of the population with a focus on obesity and metabolic risk, musculoskeletal health, intestinal health and nutritional inequalities.
The Physiological Modelling of Metabolic Risk (PMMR) group has specialist interests in investigating the underlying metabolic perturbations which accompany obesity and diabetes. It has a distinguished track record in the use of stable isotopes for in vivo human investigations in the areas of energy, glucose and lipid metabolism. An opportunity has arisen within the group for a Senior Investigator Scientist to undertake responsibility for research in a broad area of the groups programme. This could be either in the field of glucose and lipid metabolism, or that of energy requirements and macronutrient balance across the spectrum of health and disease. The successful candidate will be expected to assume full responsibility for research projects within the field, including obtaining funding, project design, implementation, and preparation of the usual scientific outputs.
The role will require close collaboration with the Head of Group, and frequent communication with scientists, clinicians, statisticians, and technical staff both within HNR and at collaborating institutions. The group maintains strong links with other workers in the general areas of obesity and impaired metabolism in the Cambridge area, and there is ample scope for close collaboration with scientists of international standing.
Applicants will be expected to have a PhD or equivalent with experience in studying human physiology, preferably employing tracer techniques. They should have a proven track record in academic research. Experience of statistics or modelling would be an advantage.
