Diogenes GI Database Home

The Diogenes GI database is currently undergoing some technical alterations – the tables are available for downloading but the search function is not currently active.
If you have an questions in the meantime please email your query.

Diogenes is a pan-European Programme to tackle obesity from a dietary perspective: seeking new insights and new routes to prevention. As part of the Diogenes intervention study Glycaemic Index (GI) values were assigned to the Czech, Danish, Dutch, German and UK food composition tables. GI values were also assigned to foods consumed by study participants that were not included in any of the above food composition tables.

You will be able to search for GI and GL values of individual foods, food groups or download one the seven separate GI tables.

By searching or downloading the Diogenes GI database you agree to cite the source (Aston et al. Obesity Reviews 2010) if you use any of the values.

How to use the GI Database

Foods will be able to be searched for in Czech, Danish, Dutch, English, German, Greek or Spanish. It will also be possible to narrow the search by specifying food group.

Currently all foods are translated into English and if English is used for the search then the entire GI database will be searched, however if one of the other languages is used then only the country specific GI table can be searched.

The following information will be displayed for each food:

  • Database
  • Food name in English
  • Food name in original language
  • GI value
  • GL value

All GI values from one of the countries can also be downloaded as a CSV text file and saved on your computer. Please remember that these can only be regarded as up to date at the time of download and are not for resale or use for commercial value.

The top row in the text file describes the content of the data below. For some foods there are no national food codes, these foods were added by the investigators.

If you use the GI values you must cite the publication outlining the GI assignment methodology (Aston et al. Obesity Reviews 2010), this web-page and the date when you downloaded the GI values.
